Paul (Aka Tad) Cook

I knew Doug since we were 12, at Kellogg Junior High. He was a bright guy, very athletic, and it seemed to me at the time that ALL the girls were in love with him.

Unfortunately as an adult he gradually descended into acute schizophrenia. Long before his death he was a tragic, homeless figure, but he was always helped by our friend Andrew Friedman, who took him into his home many times, gave him money, and supported him. When we were 19, Doug, Andrew Friedman, Tom Dehn and I think Paul LaBerge and I shared a home in the U District.

In the end, he commited suicide, hanging himself in a vacant lot next to his parent's home. We held a makeshift memorial for him right where he died.

Afterward we shared memories in his parent's home, where photos were displayed. I saw one, taken when he was 12,, and it was obvious why so many young women adored him.  He was BEAUTIFUL, just an incredibly handsome and good looking boy.
